South African Flag
flag.pcx (16499 bytes)

The flag above became the national flag after the first fully democratic election on 24 April 1994.

The flag replaced the previous flag which was made up of the union jack, the former Boer republics of the Orange Free State and The Transvaal. It had 3 horizontal strips of orange, white and blue. The 3 smaller flags where put on the white stripe. This old flag was seen by many as a symbol of apartheid's oppression.

The new flag consists of 3 horizontal strips which are red, green and blue. Each is separated by a narrow strip of white. The central green band is in a Y shape with the forked end towards the flagpole. In side the Y of green is a black triangle with a yellow border.

The flag is a compromise and includes many of the popular colours from the country's flags dating back to 1652. The joining of the green bands in a Y shape is meant to symbolise reconciliation.
