Situated in the Highveld and surrounded by grasslands and a few wetlands. It consists mainly of Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is the smallest province, yet it yields 40% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. This is due to it being the most densely populated region in South Africa. It has the most educational facilities in the country, thus it has a very high literacy rate of 92,9%. The University of South Africa(UNISA) is thought to be the largest correspondence university in the world.

All the water is supplied by Vaal and Hartbeespoort Dams. Johannesburg is one of largest cities in the world that is not situated near a permanent water source. The main industries are maize farming and gold mining.
