The Free State is the third largest province. It is situated in the centre of South Africa between the Vaal and Orange Rivers. It has a vast plateau and is home to the Springbok, a national symbol. Farming activities are mainly maize; sheep; and dairy. 90% of the country's cherry crop comes from this region. The main industry is gold and diamond mining. The South African petroleum company, Sasol, has its home at Sasolburg. Sasol also produces rubbers, plastics, wax, and fertilisers.
