 EDUCATION
As a result of vast expansion of institutions of higher learning particularly in the field of science, technology, medicine, agriculture etc., and upgradation of research facilities in these disciplines, the number of scientists and technicians in our country is the third largest in the world next to USSR and USA

When we attained independence in 1947, we had 14 percent of literacy in the population as a whole, and in 1991 we had more than 52 % people literate in the country. This had been made possible partly by the progressive increase in enrolment in primary schools and partly due to a number of schemes and projects implemented by the central and state governments for promotion of adult education in the country.
