Last Wednesday night, at around 8:00 PM EDT, the extended "All Things Considered" played a fragment of music just before the local news break-in. I can't get the piece of music out of my head, and I need some help in identifying it.
Not being an expert, let me do my layman's best to describe it. The opening first notes were a violin, but incredibly mournful -- it sounded like a sorrowful scar across the air. It sounded as if the violin were playing over an orchestra, which made me think it was a concerto, but perhaps it was some shorter piece.
So there: I have a literary description of a few notes, and nothing else. I'm not under the illusion that this is easy to figure out. But if anyone heard the fragment of this piece, or if anyone has had a light bulb go off in his or her head, please take your best shot at what this is. I'm going to go crazy if all I have is this stubborn echo in my head.
By the way, I've already checked the NPR website. The last week has been so chaotic that NPR isn't posting (and hadn't collected) any of the music they played as interludes; and I called one guy at NPR to ask personally, and he said, in essence: "don't bother. It's gone to the ether." Any ideas?
