A little about the Queensland Youth Symphony:
|
Now in its 33rd year, the Queensland Youth Symphony (QYS) is recognised as one of the finest youth orchestras in the world and is the flagship orchestra of the Queensland Youth Orchestra Council (QYOC).
The 105-member QYS has performed throughout Australia and internationally (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the USA) to much critical acclaim. It has been awarded an Advance Australia Award, the National Critics' Circle Award, the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust Award for Young Australians and a 4MBS Classic FM Award marking the organisation's "outstanding contribution to the fostering of Fine Music in youth".
In 1972, the QYS became the first Australian youth orchestra to successfully audition for the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Lausanne, Switzerland. After participating again in the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in 1976, the QYS accepted an invitation to host the 1980 International Festival in Aberdeen. To date, it is the only Australian youth orchestra to have received this honour. In 1988, the QYS hosted its own International Festival of Youth Orchestras, bringing orchestras from Australia, Bavaria, Tokyo, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the USA to Brisbane for performances both here and in twenty other centres across the country. In 1997, the orchestra performed before its largest ever dedicated audience of 2,800 people in Seoul, Korea during a five week tour of Korea and Japan.
The QYS has performed with Yehudi Menuhin, Rolf Harris, Peter Ustinov, George Martin and for Queen Elizabeth II, His Excellency Mr Zhao Ziyang, former Premier of the People's Republic of China and for many charitable organisations. In 1995 and 1997, the orchestra was chosen to feature in the Opening Concerts of the Brisbane Biennial International Festival of Music. In 1998, the orchestra is performing in both the Brisbane Festival and the 4MBS Festival of Fine Music.
The QYS' alumni is an illustrious one with past members performing in all of Australia's major orchestras and holding significant positions in orchestras around the world.
