ZVOLEN

The castle at Zvolen was built by Ludovit I. in 1370-1380 on a tenace enclosing the municipal construction in the vicinity of the former Zvolen Zvolen zhupa castle, which was called The Deserted Castle. The royal hunting chateau in the Gothic style was inspired by the Italian four-winged municipal buildings. The Zvolen castle was built on a four- Gothic saloon winged plan view with two block-like towers incorporated into it. The Late Gothic modification of the castle was carried out in 1505 when the castle was owned by the Thurzo family. During period od the anti-Turkish struggle the castle walls were reinforced and the castle walls extended by another storey with an attic and cannon loopholes. The restoration work started in 1956 and was directed towards Gothic architecture and its early Renaissance modification. The interior of the castle has been used for displaying collections of the Slovak National Gallery. The Slovak Government has declared it National cultural monument.
