KEZMAROK

The Late Gothic castle was built on the ruins of a church and monastery of St. Elizabeth, which used to be the centre of an older settlement in the l3th century. The original plan view of Kezmarok the Gothic chateau dates back to 1470 when the mighty stronghold built of stone was extended from the inside by a storeyed Gothic palace and other buildings. In 1583 the castle became the property of Sebastian Thokoly, who promoted its rennovation and later on his grandson Stephen II. commenced Castle gate a sweeping reconstruction of the castle. During this period the castle was decorated by attics with gable fronts which were adorned by rich sgraffito ornaments and some of the luxurious rooms were set up. The most valuable part of the chateau is a chapel which was rennovated in 1658. After suppression of the Thokoly rebellion in 1685 the estate became royal property. Finally in 1702 the castle was turned into the town's property. At present the castle is under reconstruction which includes the castle and part of the town's fortification and a poorhouse which are in its close neighbourhood.
