Survey Review
We conducted a survey to see
find out about the general attire of both the male and female
delinquents of Singapore. The male delinquents are usually termed
as "Ah Beng" while the female ones are termed as
"Ah Lian". From the survey, we found out several
interesting things the public thinks about the "Bengs"
and the "Lians". We shall now briefly touch on the
results of the survey and what we feel about the results.
Our first section of the
survey covers the attire and hairstyles of "Ah Bengs".
We found out that there are four main types of jeans that
"Ah Bengs" prefer or usually wear. They are namely
Alien Workshop, Versace, Calvin Klein and DKNY. These brands of
jeans are very popular in Singapore and it is no wonder why these
teens usually wear them out. To accompany their jeans, it was
also found that these people like to wear Pierre Cardin belts.
Most people feel that "Ah Bengs" usually fold up their
long sleeves when they go out, and it is believed by some that it
is one of the most important characteristic of "Ah
Bengs". It is also noted that some people feel that most
"Bengs" have long sideburns and a long tail and their
hair is parted at the centre.
The second section of the
survey is relatively shorter and seeks what kind of clothes and
the hairstyle of "Ah Lians". Basically, we received an
overwhelming result that "Ah Lians" like to wear
tight-fitting clothes and keep long hair or other
"cool" kind of hairstyle that they feel is unique. It
is no wonder we received this result as there is really an
incredible number of teenage gals nowadays hanging out at popular
spots like Orchard Road wearing very tightly fitted clothes.
Our third section continues to
find out the types of footwear, both slippers and shoes that both
the "Bengs" and the "Lians" like to wear.
This is of less importance and relevance as the type of footwear
is usually less noticed. It is generally noted that these teens
like to wear Converse all-star slippers and shoes and also Nike
shoes. We have no rejection regarding this result.
Then, we surveyed on the type
of language used by these teens and the hangouts they go to. We
found that the general idea of the public is that
"Bengs" and "Lians" are very vulgar and uses
foul languages most of the time. However, we feel that this is
not always true. Although we cannot refute the fact that there
are indeed many delinquents who use a lot of vulgarities.
However, there are also a large number of "Bengs" and
"Lians" who only want to look cool and don’t
really like using vulgarities. We also found out that the
favourite hangouts of these teens are shopping centres. This is
very true as the shopping centres offer a large varieties of
shopping goods and items especially clothes which attract them to
visit these shops often.
We also posed a question to
the public regarding why they think these "Bengs" and
"Lians" behave in this way. The greatest number of
votes go to the reason that they are comfortable with this kind
of behavior and that they need to identify themselves with the
trend in this manner. Once again, we feel that this is true as
many teens nowadays don’t really have a mind of their own.
All they do is to follow the crowd and by doing so, they actually
feel safe and comfortable.
Some other characteristics of
"Bengs" and "Lians" that we found out are
that they keep a long comb in the back pocket and that they dye
their hair.
