Fishing Derbys |

| Due to the high number of sport fishermen in the state of Alaska, annual fishing derbys are held throughout the state. Usually hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes are given out to make these events more exciting and competitive. Both halibut and salmon are the main fish that make up these contests. In Haines, located on the Southeast panhandle, an annual halibut derby is held around the month of August. During this event record breaking halibut can be brought in while weighing up to 200 or 300 pounds. In the capital city of Juneau, an annual "Golden North Salmon derby" is held usually beginning around Memorial Day. This event is known throughout the southeast while bringing in fishermen from all over. Some participants come from the lower 48 states to take part in this fun and competitive event. In addition, this an other salmon derbies around the state are know to bring in salmon weighing 75 pounds or more. Overall these events are highly held by both local and visitor in experiencing the rich supply of fish that occupy the Alaskan waters. | ||
