The history of Alaska communication is long because of the many efforts to make communication possible in the rugged and vast state of Alaska. In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s many efforts were made to link different cities and the rest of the United States. It wasn’t until 1903 that first wireless radio-telegraph was made linking all military sites to the rest of the states. The major cities were also linked together as a result of this new technology. By 1935 the Alaska Communication System was organized throughout the state. As time went by, the communication system added much to the military, residents, and visitors of throughout Alaska. In 1971 Alascom took over the communication in the state. Later on October 27,1982, Alascom brought forth its own more developed form of communication. In doing so, Alascom put a satellite into orbit to link the vast state. It was the first satellite dedicated to a single state. After which they continued to update and improve the satellite and system. Later in 1997 AT&T joined the market by installing new satellites to cater to the more rural area of the state. As result, great strides and improvement have been made in the last ten years while providing both large and small cities with both local and long distance services.
