Barrow

Barrow is home to the Midnight Sun

Located 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Barrow is the northernmost city in the United States. There are approximately 4,200 residents in Barrow. This area is probably the harshest polar location in Alaska.

This small community is much like other small locations within Alaska with no roads connecting it to other cities or communities. The two main modes of transportation for Barrow are plane or dog sled.

When the city was first discovered, it was a prime location for the harvesting of whales. Later, Barrow became a very large and important whaling site. Barrow is still a whaling community today.

Although Barrow is so far away from most big cities including the lower 48 states, tourism still is a very good part of their summer economy. Barrow is one of the most unique cities in Alaska. There one can view life fairly unchanged for centuries. Barrow is the city of whaling celebrations, polar bear watching, northern lights and the midnight sun. Barrow truly is more unique and different than any other place in the state.
