The "One Thousand Mile War" |
| In 1943, Japan attacked the naval base at Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands starting what is now known as The One Thousand Mile War. Dutch Harbor was bombed and both Attu and Kiska Islands located in the Aleutians. After the bombing, the Japanese took over those two Islands. This war received its name from the distance between Japan and The Aleutian Islands. Due to this large distance this battle was one of the most difficult and strategic. In addition, this was the first battle fought on American soil since the Civil War. Later the Japanese were driven out of Alaska. |
