Alexander van Humboldt once asked Laplace who was the greatest mathematician in Germany, and Laplace replied,
"Pfaff."
"But what about Gauss?" asked the astonished  Humboldt.
"Gauss," explained Laplace,
"is the greatest mathematician in the world."
