Robbia, Luca
(1400-1482)
Robbia, Luca della (1400-1482) Ranked as one of the great innovators at the
beginning of the 15th century, he was one of the leading marble sculptors of
the Early Renaissance and is considered the inventor of glazed terra-cotta,
usually of white figures against a blue background. To some extent this
discovery was the ruin of his art, for he was able to found a flourishing
family business that later undertook some very large and highly colored
commissions.
