I didn't catch a skate, but bought some at a good quality store. The clerk said it was fresh,
but boy, are you right about the ammonia smell!! So when buying it, remember that it's not enough to know that it's
freshly caught...smell it before you buy!

Last year I went fishing with my Godfather. We went on the the boat in Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. He caught a skate by the nose accidentally. I assisted him by helping him get it up and I tried to take the hook out of it's nose. This was the first time I ever came in counture with a skate. While trying to unhook it's nose, it grab my pointer finger and bit me. It beared down on my finger and wasn't letting go. I tried to shake it off and while doing that, one of my hooks went into my wrist. When I saw that, I ended up fainting and the crew and my godfather took the skate off my me before I came to. I was soooo livid with that damn fish! But I began to worry. i called my doctor from my cell phone and told her what happen. She told me to come in to get a tetnis shot. (This skate didn't have teeth, thank god!!)That was the worst trip I had, but I did catch 7 fish....Smile. Later that week, I decide to research this creature that bit me. I needed to know about it. Thanks to the internet, I recieved all the info I needed to about this species and the othe fish I come in counter with while fishing...

I was not able to take a picture so all I have is my word, but I caught a baby skate off the Crystal Pier in San Diego California in January of this year. I don't know if this input is anything out of the ordinary but thought I would share it with you...
