I am currious if this specie is being aquacultured in the U.S.? Where is the Anguilla spp. being farmed in the U.S., and how is it raised?

I was fishing in the Ausable River, Oscoda, MI last week. I was in the middle of the river when I saw this thing go by. I got out of the water fast. Two days later I was fishing by a dam, up river, two yougn men were fishing there from the dam side. They had pulled out many of these things. I asked them what they were, they said "eels." They just let them die on the cement.
I want to know if they are dangerous? I like fly fishing the river, but now I am afraid.
