  The New Zealand fisheries industry has set itself a target of NZ$2 billion in seafood exports by the year 2000. (Rob Lovitt, 6/,98) Now the Kiwis have begun searching the waters outside of the countries 200-mile limit for more fish.

  Species Reports

Roughy 
Roughy remains New Zealand's second most valuable seafood export (in '95, only squid was worth more), and its No. 1 seller in the US market, which absorbed NZ$136 million worth last year, almost 90% of total roughy exports. 
Hoki 
Scientists say that hoki stocks could support catches of 300,000 tons for years to come. Hoki is a fishery that's been well fished, says Alastair Macfarlane, deputy chief executive of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Board (NZFIB).
