Quite often a mistake that people make is assuming that modern music is the type of music that one finds in a record shop of the present day. This could be considered one possible explanation to the term 'modern music'. However, isn't the fact that music in record shops keep changing rapidly offer no absolute meaning to 'modern music' ?  In other words, walk in to a shop in the 1950s and what was modern rock 'n' roll music to them, is now ancient stuff  to us in the 1990s.

Well.........modern music began at the turn of the 20th century.Composers were searching for ways to be different and started exploring different options. This led to interesting outcomes and thus Modern Classical  music was invented. As time proceeded, certain types of music became popular and throughout the years different musicians have been trying to create music which would be performed in one of these popular styles.

Music that is enjoyed by the largest possible audiences is called popular music. Many kinds- from Country, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Rap and other idioms- have been popular in the 20th century. In general, popular music is the product of an industry devoted entirely to its manufacture and sale.
