German composer, born in Munich
of musical family. His earliest tone-poems and operas, much influenced
by Wagner
but more extreme in their structural
ingenuity and free use of dissonance, marked him out as the leading rebel
and modernist of the 1900s.
His later works are less adventurous, although the operas still reveal his power as a musical illustrator of endless resource and as a creator of subtle complexities of sound.
