Strauss,
Johann (II)
Son of Austrian violinist-composer, Johann Strauss (I). He followed in his father's footsteps as a prolific composer of waltzes, marches and polkas, and as a director of his own orchestra. He developed the concert-waltz and later the Viennese operetta. His music delighted the musical elite as well as the general public because of his elegant, aristocratic light music.
