
Postmaster - a person in charge of postal services. Benjamin Franklin was appointed Postmaster of Philadelphia in 1737. His innovative postal strategy, which included expanding routes and instituting overnight delivery between cities, earned him the position of Deputy Postmaster General of the British colonies. After being relieved from office by the British government over a political vendetta, Franklin was named Postmaster General of the fledgling American nation by the Second Continental Congress. Reflecting on his accomplishments through the years, Benjamin Franklin was proud that the postal service made great strides in the colonies under his expert management.
