Were we Created? Or did we Evolve?
For a long time creationists and evolutionist have been fighting, over whose theory is the correct one. Both are based on little or no solid proof. The creationists believe that a higher being created the universe, especially for humans, and placed them on the earth after creating countless animals and plants, which have remained constant. The evolutionists believe in the Big Bang theory and that humans arose from the same organism as everything else (one evolutionary tree). The creation theory is an old one, while the evolution theory is a modern one, neither has been proven. Creationists and Evolutionist have been trying to disprove each other, or prove their theory, and it is important to look at the "evidence" produced by both sides.
It is important realise that neither the evolution nor creation hypothesis have been proven, and that they are both merely theories. In most schools, the students have a right to their own religion, however in earlier years, evolution was taught as fact. People felt so strongly about this, that the Tennessee Anti-Evolution Act (1925) and the Tennessee Creationism Act (1973) were created. These acts prohibited the teaching of evolution and prohibited representing evolution as fact, respectively. So it is obvious that these are very sensitive issues.
The 1st law of thermodynamics states that the energy in the universe is constant. The Big Bang theory states that the universe came out of nothing, and so violates the thermodynamics law. Either the Big Bang theory or the thermodynamics theory is incorrect. This is one of the pieces of "evidence" which the creationists are using to disprove evolution. Surely then, the universe must have been made by a creator. The creationists are in fact just contradicting themselves, as they are saying that the Big Bang theory is not "natural" and therefore impossible. However their theory about "God did it" also is not "natural". So this argument is not going to get anyone anywhere.
For some people this simple argument between creationists and evolutionists is not purely a quest to discover were we really do come from. Some people will do anything to convince others of their beliefs.
Various frauds have come to light recently. Piltdown Man, had been accepted has a valid specimen of a transitional form for 40 years, and only recently with fluorine analysis has it been proven a hoax. The Creationists too, have had their share of frauds. The Paluxy River tracks were alleged human footprints among dinosaur tracks, which intended to prove that man and dinosaur lived at the same time. However this too were discovered to be a fraud.
Around the world there are all sorts of strange creatures. Flightless birds with hollow bones - as if adapted for flight; blind animals with useless lenses and retinas - as if adapted for sight; and the vestigial pelvis of pythons and whales. It is logical to assume that these creatures are genetic "mistakes", and surely if they had arisen though creation (via GOD), they could only have been made by a very crazy or clumsy creator.
Evolutionists assume that organisms develop or lose certain features over time, and that each feature is independent. However studies have shown that features depend on the presence of other features to provide a benefit. Often features are grouped together in a system that requires all the parts to be present and functioning to provide any benefit at all. However, "useless" features such as the human appendix are exceptions to the rule. This problem is particularly bad for the theory of evolution. This rule of feature interdependence could prove that evolution is impossible, however it is a new study.
The creationists have very little evidence to prove their belief. They simply have a strong belief in the existence of a being (GOD), which has much power, and created the universe originally. There are many different religions, which believe in creation by a higher being, however almost every religion is different. They have different beliefs, different rules, and different ways. Religious arguments are not to be taken lightly, and people of different religions are constantly fighting each other, simply because they want to make the other, believe in their GOD. This shows how little can be proven about the "creator theory".
The creationists also turn to the second law of thermodynamics to discredit the evolutionists. This law states that randomness (entropy) in the universe always increases. So the universe is getting more and more disordered. If this is true, life couldn't have occurred by evolution, since evolutionists claim that life is a system that becomes more ordered with time. But this in turn, like in previous arguments, contradicts them.
Another hypothesis that has come about, is the "appearance-of-age" hypothesis. This creationist idea is that God made the earth to look as though it was much older than it really is. This theory was proposed during Victorian times, and was no accepted well by Victorians, as this created a devious image of their creator. This again is another theory, and cannot possibly be proven. If anybody were to believe this, then what would stop us from believing that we were created only a few minutes ago, complete with our memories?
Both sides have little evidence to base their theories one. And from this evidence and my own outlook on things, I don't agree entirely with either. Both are great ideas, and they may have some trues, but I believe that the true is something far more complex. Nothing is provable, especially not the past, and currently we have no way of proving or disproving these theories. When the truth is revealed someday, people might look back at these ideas with great hilarity.
