Farmers

In the Netherlands there are many, many farmers. They keep all kinds of animals, from cows till ostriches. The farmers keep these animals just because they can earn money with them. Sometimes, the farmer isn't so lucky. His animals can get a disease. If his (or, why not, her) animals get  sick, the farmer loses much money. Most of the farmers have to work all day long There are many things to do at their farm. As a farmer you'll have to work hard and be there for your animals, day and night. If it is to hot, you'll have to put on the fan, if it gets to cold you'll have to put on the heating and if a cow will have a calf you'll have to miss a night sleep.

Many things changed for the animals. Machines can do a lot of work. A cow can be milked with a machine and chickens and pigs can be fed with a machine. Farmers have to do less  work. A farmer has still much work to do because he often has to do it alone. The Government makes rules without any compassion. Everything has to go just as they say, and a lot of farmers are victims of that.

People who are a farmer very often come from a farm were they were born and raised. They find the work very pleasant and they almost think it's ideal. They won't even dream of working in an office and sit  behind a desk all day long. They like to tell about their work and most of them can't be stopped while telling.

Why is it so attractive to be a farmer in the bio-industry? Can it be unattractive?  How can you farm in an other way? Read it on the next pages!
