Dung
Dung Quota
The enormous meat production
in Western Europe is not only injurious for the concerned animals, but
also other area's are effected. For instance the dung problem. At this
moment about 90 ton dung a year is produced. A lot of regulations
are made. For instance the dung quota. That's a maximal quantity, for all
extra production you will have to pay a penalty. Sometimes personal ad's
are placed by farmer sons or farmer daughter’s who are looking for a partner
that has space left in dung quotum. And sometimes they really marry, and
then it’s called a dung wedding. Another solution is let your cattle stay
with a farmer who is below his dung quota.
Processing industries
There are 14 dung processing
industries in the Netherlands, They had to be the solution. They had to
process about 6 till 10 million ton. But most farmers don't deliver much
dung because they think it's too expansive, so there is a shortage of raw
materials. That means that the industry only processes about 1 million
ton.
Delivering
Delivering the dung to other
countries isn't without problems too. There aren't any countries in Europe,
which need dung from Holland. For many farmer's there is just one solution,
they spread more and more dung on the same piece of land, the consequence
is that some pieces of land are poisoned. Ammonia is produced, which
causes sour rain. There are a lot of other dangerous chemicals in dung,
like phosphate, nitrate and copper. These chemicals cause soil- and air-pollution.
So in some territories they don't pump up drinking water any more.
Consequences
Nature also suffers becase
of the dung. Because of the sour rain the soil is soured and that
means that many trees dies. If you spread too much dung on your land the
land will be poisoned. But not only the land is poisoned, the ground water,
the lakes and rivers even the air is poisoned too . Of the few nature reserves
that are present in the Netherlands at this moment a lot is spoiled. In
the past years however the amount of reserves are luckily grown
