The biggest advantage in keeping a lot of animals on a relative small area , is that a lot of money can be made with little land. This is nesseccary for many farmers. In this way you can start farming with a little plot of land and keep your head above water although it will always be hard with ever growing farms. Very important too are the relatively low costs. But there are a lot of advantages for the society too, for instance the  ground saving. Al the land that is not used for cattle can be used in a different way like housing esates, industrial estates or kept as nature reserves . Especially the last is necessary, because nature reserves in Holland are few.
