
 
Gothic style had spread out all over the Europe in the late 14th and early
15th century but painting, whose border line is between southern and
northern parts of the Alps, developed in different ways. Roughly
saying, Italian paintings were drawn in perspective and early
Nertherlandian pictures was expressed in realism.

Painters of Nertherlands usually painted "St. Mary" in which things
of daily necessity were made in detail. This realism was also found
in Jan van Eyck, Jan's works So the realism was named "disguised
symbolism". Jan van Eyck's works are so realistic that we can't
find if they are photos or pictures even if we look into them closer
and closer.

The early German paintings were mostly influenced by Netherlands
but in 16th century they were by Italy. Painters in northern parts of
Europe came to Italy to learn about Renaissance. Albrecht was
the representative man among them. made a great contribution
to mix Italian ancient ideal beauty and realism in northern Europe.
 
Lucas Cranach's nude statues ( mostly Venus ) were well - known. The
shapes of his statues were quite different from those of the Ancient.
In 's case, he expressed religious feelings by using loud
colors. He therefore, was recognized as the last painter of Gothic Era.

At those times, painters started to make landscapes which was a mere second stringer.
