Bellini was famed for his paintings of the Madonna and
Child. From his 65-year-long career, no fewer than 14 of
the major works that survive are on this, his favourite theme.
It is one of the most ancient of all religious subj-
ects,
yet Bellini was able to invigorate what had become a formula, an icon, with a fully convincing depiction of both
the sacred and the human.
