even a piece of turf with an analytical eye. This watercolour was executed at the same
time as animal studies, which were recorded with similar microscopic exactitude.
Such delicacy of observation was translated into an increasin- gly refined engraving
technique (right), in which many details can only be truly appreciated by looking through
a magnifying glass.
