Leonardo's famous drawing, Vitruvian Man, illustrates a classical formula devised by Vitruvius. It is simply explained
by the mathematician Luca Pacioli, who often worked with
Leonardo: " Having considered the right arrangement of the
human body, the ancients proportio-
ned all their work, particularly the temples, in accordance with it. In the human body
they discovered the two main figures without which it is impossible to achieve anything, namely the perfect circle and the square.
"Spread-eagled, the man fits into a circle; with feet
together and arms outstretched, he fits into a square.
