DOME OF FLORENCE CATHEDRAL

DOME OF FLORENCE CATHEDRAL

Brunelleschi designed a dome(1420~36) to crown the 14thcentury Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore: it had remained incomplete, with a huge octagonal opening that posed enormous constructional problems. Although Brunelleschi went to Rome with the sculptor Donatello to study classical buildings, the dome is largely Gothic in character, built around a self-supporting masonry of eight main ribs.
