1490, 43*31cm, Oil on wood
The only known portrait of a man painted by Leonardo. The
sitter was probably the Choirmaster of Milan Cathedral, Franchino
Gaffurio, a friend of the painter's. He is depicted holding a
musical score. Only the face and hair are finished; the rest has
been left in the state of an advanced sketch. With its brisk handling
and psychological penetration, this is one of Leonardo's most unusual portraits.
