MADONNA LITTA OR MADONNA NURSING THE CHILD

MADONNA LITTA OR
MADONNA NURSING THE CHILD

     1490, 42*33cm, Oil
After much controversy, this picture is today generally
attributed to Leonardo, although it may have been finished by Boltraffio, his best-known student. The style displays the Lombard influence under which Leonardo worked during his first sojourn in Milan; this style is characterized by a very stark modelling of the figures, quite different from the sfumato of his later works. Originally painted on a wood panel, then transferred to canvas in the nineteenth century, this painting has unfortunately suffered some damage.
