Health Risks From the Sun

Everyone loves to be outside. We love to be in the sun, perfecting that suntan. We also do different types of work, play, or exercise and try to be comfortable at the same time by wearing clothing that helps us be comfortable and "exposed" to the sun. We know that sunrays are harmful to our health and skin due to the UVB rays that reach the earth. Health risks are extreme due to sun and air pollution.

You love the sun, don't you? But did you know hat it can give you a skin cancer called Melanoma? Melanoma is the most serious form of cancer. It can spread all over the body but if it's detected in its earliest stages, it can be cured. But if it's not treated, a person could die.

Melanoma looks like a mole called melanomas. It is a dark brown color that's why it looks like a mole. It is important to know of any known moles on the body so that if in any case, changes will be more easily visible. Another skin disease is called Actinic Keratosis. These are skin growths that occur on body parts exposed to the sun. The face, hands, forearms, and the "v" of the neck are especially where this type of a blemish occurs on the body. They are not malignant but if actinic keratosis is left untreated, it could turn into a malignant disease like Melanoma.

The sunrays also cause other health problems. One health problem is Cataracts. A cataract is a disease that damages the eye by decreasing the transparency in the lens.

This clouds vision making it harder to see. If a cataract is left untreated, it can develop into blindness. A cataract is curable with modern eye surgery. Other eye damage caused by UVB rays include pterygium, which is tissue growth on the white of the eye and can cause blindness, skin cancer around the eyes, and degeneration of the macula. UVB rays can suppress the immune system. Scientists have found that sunburns can alter the distribution and function of diseases - fighting white blood cells in humans up to 24 hours after exposure to the sun. Long-lasting damage to the immune system can happen due to repeated exposure to the UVB radiation.
