Materials List

When making out a materials list your budget must be considered. If you are working for a small community theater money may be limited. However, even a professional theater worries about the "bottom line." When considering the set and what materials are needed, it is important to remember that the set must be durable, but not so durable that you go over budget.

It is also important to remember to buy things such as painting supplies, sand paper, nails, screws, and building materials other than lumber.

When making out your materials list, only list the things that you must have. It is good to buy a few extra feet of lumber and a few extra nails just in case your estimates were not right. When buying lumber check around for the best price, and always buy standard pieces. Buying non-standard dimensions or thick plywood can be very costly.

Some theater companies use screws instead of nails. Screws are stronger in certain situations. Screws are also easier to take out than nails, therefore the set is "broken down" easier.

Painting is often a wonderful addition to a set design. There are a few items that need to be purchased. Rollers, rolling pans, drop cloths, paint thinner, brushes, and paints are a few things.

If your theater is a non-profit theater check to see if local businesses will donate needed materials.
