Fans are mounted on the inside of a computer's case to blow air across the motherboard and expansion cards and keep them a bit cooler than they would otherwise be.

If your case doesn't already have a fan, it's definitely a good idea to buy one. Most processors and other components last longer at lower temperatures, making a fan a worthy investment for its low price.

There isn't much variation in the quality and features of most fans. Almost any computer-specific fan will suffice. Most fans can be obtained for $5 to $20.

A Phillips screwdriver and about 10 minutes of time are required to install a fan.

the installation
  1. Make sure the computer is turned off.

  2. Carefully disconnect all of the cables from the back of your computer, place the computer on a stable working platform, and remove the outer case (including the front panel). Discharge any static electricity from your body by touching the computer's power supply.

  3. Locate and remove the plastic fan cage by pressing the protruding tabs (usually at the front of the case).

  4. Mount the new fan inside the cage by sliding it onto the four pegs.

  5. Replace the fan cage and the front panel of the case.

  6. Locate an unused power cable and plug it into the fan's power cable.

  7. Replace the outer case and move the computer back to its original location. Reconnect all of the cables.
