Charles Darwin is credited for developing the theory of evolution from his famous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle. Darwin, unlike other scientists of his time, was an atheist (although he was raised as a traditional Christian). Darwin's uptightness cost more than he bargained for. Pressure from his father and keeping the theory secret proved too much for Darwin. However, in the latter part of his life (when he had many bouts of illness), Darwin did most of his work on Origin of Species and Descent of Man. Today, we owe our knowledge of evolution to Darwin.
