Chinese education today is struggling to define itself in the gap between influences of traditional and foreign educational styles.

Although great efforts have been made to keep up with foreign advances, the influence of the feudalism educational system that has been in use for thousands of years has not been completely replaced by modern techniques.

So we have to say regretfully:

China is stuck between the modern and ancient teaching styles.

(1) We live for our grades

China is a country with a very large population. In a country with so many people a college diploma is essential to gain a higher position in society and be successful. For this reason the emphasis of the education system is not on whether the students are studying what they are interested in, but on whether they will graduate smoothly.

So the ultimate purpose of ten or more years of struggle becomes meanly a diploma.

The only purpose for the school years from primary school to college is preparing the students for the many examinations they must take. This makes the students' only pursuit to get a high grade on every test. Grades such tests have become the principal standard by which a student is judged. The only way to achieve a high position in school is to have a high grade on the test.

Our test grades have become the most important things in our life, to the point that we loose our ambition to dream and the precious times of youth that all too soon will be gone forever.

We live only for grades and can even die for them.

(2) We don't know what we can do but study

Day in and Day out we struggle for the good grades in school. We study how to deal with examinations and how to get a good grade, but we don't know how to live.

this kind of study takes most of our time, so we hardly have time to learn other subjects of which we are very fond indeed. We don't know anything besides studying.

We can work difficult problems, answer the questions from the teacher properly and even recite a whole book! But when it comes time to leave school what can we do?

Nobody tells us, and nobody teaches us.
