Although we seldom see a star in the process of changing as they age, we can see stars in
different stages of development, and can so piece together a star's life story. A star is
born when a huge, dense cloud of dust and gas begins to collapse under its own gravity.
Its central temperatures rise to thousands of degrees, and at these temperatures the gas
starts to undergo nuclear fusion reactions, giving out so much energy that it starts
shining steadily.
