7/8/98 - Adhesion and Cohesion

When the molecules of a material are attracted to other molecules of the same material, this is called cohesion. This force is what holds things together. When molecules of different materials are attracted to each other, the force that results is called adhesion. This force makes one thing stick to another. In both cases the basis for the force is the attraction between atoms..

7/9/98 - Acids and Bases

Any molecule that donates a proton to other molecules in a chemical reaction is an acid. Very strong acids can be extremely corrosive. Bases are any molecule that accepts a proton in a chemical reaction. While it is the direct opposite of an acid, stong bases like lye are still extremely corrosive. Acid and base levels are measured on a PH scale.

7/10/98 - What Is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the branch of science concerned with the formation and properties of molecules, which are combinations of two or more atoms. Chemistry is the central science. It touches on almost everything else.

7/11/98 - Man Made Elements

Elements that are heavier than Uranium have been made in laboratories by scientists trying to create them. The majority of these elements are radioactive and they have very short half lives. The elements are manufactured in an accelerator, where one nucleus is slammed into another at very high speeds. When the two collide, they fuse together. The scientists then try to identify the element before it disappears.
