At a recent international chemistry symposium, chemists sited the many benefits of point-of-care blood gas and electrolyte testing. This, according to speaker Dr. Charles Handorf, can lead to better care for patients in an increasingly high-tech field. Dr. Lasse Larsson, Director of the Point-of-Care Testing Unit at Linkoping University Hospital
concurred, "The i-STAT System, which has been adopted in our hospital, fits well into the paradigm shift of improving patient care by moving testing to the bedside.''

Progenics Pharmaceuticals and Pharmacopeia have started to begin working together to discover "small-molecule HIV therapeutics that block the
attachment of the virus to its primary cellular receptor, CD4." Since this is one of the most crucial turning points in an HIV-infected patient, this research could help to stop, or at least slow, development of the HIV.
