Design Paradise--Statistical Background

This section is a collection of flags from the interactive game. They are short messages giving players advice or status reports. Since many of them are triggered by interrelationships among industry, environment, and population, we here at Design Paradise felt if was important to define, discuss, and explain them.

Relationship (formula-based) Flags

We learned from the Kauai Statistical Abstract that, for every 1 job in the hotel industry, there are 2 jobs in the retail industry. Agriculture supports .005 jobs per acre (total agriculture jobs/total agriculture acreage). Together, these make up 35% of the work force, or 11,716 jobs. Our working formula for the game states:

We estimated the ratio of urban and rural zoned land to agriculture and conservation land in order to come up with this ratio. Thus, our formula on land use states:

With 18,000 visitors present per day (from the Kauai Statistical Abstract) and an average of 2 visitors per room, we estimated that about 9,000 rooms would be needed. Because we're being nice and giving the players some leeway, they have 3,000 additional units to develop before the warning flag pops up. Therefore, our formula on tourism is as follows:

Location Triggered Flags
This set of flags is triggered by location. In order to create them, we talked to archaeologists about areas that are likely to have archaeological remains, we found out which areas are special to Kauai residents, we borrowed books on coastal wildlife, and we looked at the Kauai Visitor Survey to find out which sites are popular among tourists.

The area in which you propose to build is known to residents as Hanakapiai. It is a major fishing and camping spot as well as the home to many plant and animal species. Residents would be a wee bit displeased if you attempted to raze this area as they value preserving Kauai's rural lifestyle.

The area in which you propose to build is called the Na Pali Coast. In Hawaiian, Pali means "cliff." Need we say more? Besides being impossible to build on, the coast is a major tourist attraction with 22% of Kauai tourists visiting Na Pali.

The area which you propose to develop is known as Mahaulepu. In addition to being a fishing and camping spot, Mahaulepu's cliffs are home to the native Hawaiian wedge tail shearwaters. Although the shearwaters aren't an endangered species, it is projected that environmentalists (not to mention the birds themselves) will strongly oppose your development.

The area in which you propose to build is called the Alakai Swamp. In addition to having dirty building conditions, the swamp is home to many native species. (Alligators, Piranhas, man-eating mosquitoes, the usual--just kidding). Also, the swamp is considered a place of visitor interest. Development in the Alakai Swamp is not possible due to poor conditions and the fact that tourists cite Kauai's natural beauty as one of the major reasons for visiting Kauai and, believe it or not, the swamp really is beautiful.

This area is known as Spouting Horn. It's an interesting shoreline rock formation that sprays a large stream of water out when waves break beneath it. Anyway, development is not recommended here because tourists and residents alike value it as part of Kauai's "natural beauty." Most importantly, it looks really cool. Bwoooooo!

This is known as Poipu Beach. It is one of the favorites among both residents and tourists. In fact, 31% of Kauai tourists pay Poipu Beach a visit. Thus, development there is not recommended.

The area in which you propose to build is part of Mt. Waialeale, the now dormant volcano from which the island of Kauai was formed. Due to its elevation and steepness, development there is impossible.

The area in which you propose to build is Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Due to its steepness, development here is impossible.

Due to poor building conditions (sogginess and such), you are not allowed to develop the ocean. Besides, oceans are under federal jurisdiction and obtaining the proper building permits would be an extremely lengthy process.
