Discovery of an Endangered Species

In the case of a development near Poipu, scientists hired to explore the site discovered a rare blind cave spider. The mites that the spider feeds on live in the root system of the trees above. Because the spider is an endangered species, the development company was forced to build around the 10 acre habitat of the spiders and mites. In addition, the company paid $750,000 for the scientists to write up an environmental impact statement, reporting their findings. Bummer.

Discovery of a Rare Species

Kauai County officials were considering the Makaleha springs as a water source for the thirsty people in Lihue. However, a rare breed of snail--the Newcomb Snail, was discovered living near the springs. Because the snail only lives in two places on the entire island, the county could not use the Makaleha Springs and the people of Lihue had to find a alternate source of water.

Building Height Limitation

picture of terracing in Princeville hotel Many Kauai hotels comply with the 4-story building height limitation by "terracing" their hotels. Since most of them are built on hills or ridges, they build a series of 4-story terraces down the hill. As a result, the hotels can maintain their desired size, achieve an artistic terraced look, and comply with the height law. Pretty neat huh? picture of terracing in the Hyatt

Archaeological Sites

picture of pavillion built around Russian Fort Developers of the Princeville Hotel discovered an old Russian Fort on the building site. Instead of moving the hotel, they left the remnants of the fort intact and built a gazebo near the site. In the gazebo are displays and maps, informing visitors of the fort's history.
