What's going on: On Thursday, September 11, a 4 acre diversified agriculture garden on the Kauai Community College campus was blessed. Created two years ago to "promote and support small-scale farming on the island," the garden contains rows of corn and vegetables and taro patches. It's being used to retrain sugar workers laid off by the closing of McBryde sugar, people enrolled in the Department of Labor's diversified agriculture programs, and KCC students. Eventually, the garden wil simulate an ahupua'a, or ancient Hawaiian division of land.

What's going on: In a recent column on economic development, Gary Hooser recommends promoting Kauai's quality of life rather than trying to "compete on price in a global business environment." Decreasing the crime rate, increasing the quality of education, making sure parks and beaches are safe, Hooser says, will be more profitable than concentrating on government regulations and taxes because "the only competetive edge we will have is our unique quality of life and the natural beauty of our island."

And a new link for Design Paradise! We have just been informed that the site has now been featured as one of the links on the Kauai Rainforest Site--a great way to learn about preserving one of Kauai's natural resources!
