Jeff is a guy whose programming career dates back to the early days of the
Atari. He was raised with the illusion that 16 colors, on a TV screen, was awesome. His earliest BASIC programs date back to the Atari 800 when he was in the 1st grade. Later, Jeff's interest in programming was revived when he purchased his first 386
computer with money from his newspaper route. He soon exceeded the programming capacities of BASIC and was forced to learn a new programming language.
His Father often spoke of a mysterious language by the name of C. When Jeff asked his father if it was wise to take on the new language, the answer was, "a slim chance of survival." The reason, "It's so difficult and complex." This did not seem to bother Jeff. His life was fueled only by intense competition and doing the impossible. In 1993, Jeff released his first commercial program for a local radio station. Later, he went on to expand his knowledge to C++.
Although Jeff is rarely faced with answers, he often is presented with problems, questions and puzzles to solve. He is naturally equipped with a mind of a sponge and a filter for information. In January of 1996, he got his first Internet connection. A few pointers and a few days later, Jeff put up his home page for his business and a e-zine called PCTJ.
Later Jeff was again faced with yet another "mission impossible." This time it was to interface a complex city simulation program with the World Wide Web. He had no idea how CGI even worked, but decided to give it a try. He picked up Perl in early June because of its popularity in CGI programming. However, even with all the support, he soon realized that his city simulation needed much more power. He decided to give C++ a try with CGI programming. The problem was that C++ had little CGI support, and the interfacing was more difficult. But with the programming's added power and his own persistance, Jeff was able to create Design Paradise. Design Paradise at this moment i n time (August 1996) stands as one of the most complex simulations available through the World Wide Web.
Jeff does much more than midnight coding runs. He has his own Business which he runs for the sole purpose of furthering his education. He enjoys playing volleyball and making music with his guitar. If he is not doing any of the above, he's probably at the movies or sound asleep.
When asked what were the most difficult tasks in this competition, he replied, "Learning how to interface programs with CGI and debugging. Debugging is a major task especially when all you can see is the output on a remote terminal rather than on a local terminal."
He leaves us with how he feels about Think Quest. "It's like the Olympics; you train, you practice and you do all you possibly can to prepare. Now it's showtime, and all you can do is hope, hope that you and your team will take home the gold."

Soon after that his mother began to learn E-mail. Then the Internet exploded onto the television screens and magazines everywhere. Darren was forced to attend a HTML workshop with his mother and quickly learned the basic HTML elements. With this knowledge, he and a handful of 7th graders at Moanalua Intermediate School created a webpage for their school.
It was that year that Darren got introduced to Japanese Animation by another student at MIS. He began to collect Japanese comic books (even though he could not understand them) and learn
this new type of art. The pages of his drawing book began changing from muscular superheros, to big-eyed Japanese cartoons with pointy hair. By the end of that 7th grade year Darren had created s"D's
Homepage", a simple page with links to video games and a section with his art.
Darren now attends Moanalua High School, and is a freshman. He is in the marching band and plays the trumpet. He still collects Japanese animation, and has added 4 new sections to his page--D's notepad (writing), D's photo gallery, D's music pages, and Trunks' Japanese Anime Page.
He has once again changed his art style to graphic arts, and hopes to learn the C++ programming language with the help of Jeff Chan and his programming books.
As leader of the Design Paradise Think Quest team (Dawn was chosen to be
the team leader because, in her own words, "I was the only liberated female of the 90s on the team. Thus, they allowed me to assume the previously male-dominated position of team leader") Dawn had many responsibilities and a ton of stress. But his did
not phase Dawn. "Oh, nooooo. It did not phase me!' she adds dramatically. "I mean, spending my summer interviweing people, creating web pages, writing, and learning is way better than spending it oozing around the house like some kind of slug."
In addition to having a way with words and dual personalities (Dawn is the author of this biography), she is interesting because she is obsessed with traveling regularly between Paris, London, and New York and she is learning French from Celine Dion CDs. Unfortunately, however, Dawn complains a lot. Now, for example, she is complaining that, "this interview is making me sound flaky." Contrary to what she believes, Dawn's dreams are not that unrealistic. At the age of 15, she has already traveled to Japan for an International Youth Summit and to Europe, once with her family and once as an EF Ambassador representing the state of Hawaii.
Dawn hopes to attend a college on the East Coast with a study abroad program and major in communication--journalism or
film. Until then, Dawn will keep busy by playing the piano, writing her screenplay, going to school, possibly entering the Think Quest 97 contest, rollerblading, teaching herself French, and driving her new car. Reading over her own shoulder, Dawn looks
thoughtfully at the screen and adds, "but mostly I'll be thinking, dreaming, and writing."
Darren was born on Sept. 27th 1982 on the island of O'ahu. From the time he was little, Darren was exposed to computers. His father introduced him to simple computer games like Zaxxon, Frogger, and Pac-Man. He also began typing poetry and writing stories on simple word-processers. In 1990 his family moved to the island of Kauai.
When he was in the 5th grade his art career began to take off. On a family trip to the East Coast, he got bored riding on the planes and buses, so he began to "Copy" drawings from his superhero cards to paper. Soon he bagan to collect comics, not for the story, but for the art. He began filling sketch books with superheroes from comics and from his head.

Dawn likes to think of herself as a, "thinker, a dreamer, and a writer. I know it sounds trite," she admits, "but it's what I enjoy doing and it's what I would like to do for the rest of my life." Dawn has found an outlet for some of her creative energy in the form of world wide web publishing. Two years ago, she constructed her own niche in the dynamic world of the internet--Dawn's Place in Cyberspace. The site featured cartoons, writing, pictures, links, Dawn's class schedule, and audio clips. The most impressive feature about the site, however, is that it was created over the
weekend. Since then, the site has evolved. Now, it also contains a library of Dawn's writing, Dawn's résumé, and Dawn's Film Page, which reflects her interest in screen writing and film.
