Your Mission

Welcome to the Design Paradise headquarters! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to balance the needs of industry, environment, and population on the island of Kauai. Currently, most of the land on Kauai is owned by 7 major corporations. For the sake of the game however, you will initiate development. As Chief Executive Officer of a big company, you must coordinate the following:

  • Rezoning land
  • Building structures like shops, malls, and hotels
  • Setting aside land for agricultural development
  • Dealing with general mayhem Design Paradise will give you

Evaluation

As you develop Kauai, people will begin moving there and government infrastructure such as (schools, police departments, fire departments, utilities) will automatically be set up. The hard part is that you will be evaluated on the basis of:

After you have completed the game, you will have the chance to compare the results of your virtual Kauai with the real Kauai.

Game Interface

First of all, we would like to point you to the top of your web browser. The title of the page is like a quick status check. This will display your company name, the map you are looking at, and of course the turn you are on. For example you may see:

"Design Paradise - Builders Inc. - Turn 3 - Map 1"

This means your company name is Builders Inc., you are on turn number 3 and you are looking at map number 1. In general you will use this just to get your bearings, especially when you come back to resume your game in future sessions. If you have frames, the game screen is divided into 4 sections. We left you the ability to resize the frames. After all, who are we to say how your game should look? If you don't have frames, all 4 sections will appear in order in one large page. Either way, the displays are fast and optimized. Isn't that amazing? (yeah just send your check for $99.95 now!)

The largest window marked A, is the main window. This window is multi-purpose. It can display both the map you are on, and between turns, it will display messages.

Directly below is Section B. This is like the dash board of your empire. From here, you can check on the status of your island, jump into a chat room, post a message, and - would you believe it - sign off. In addition, it will allow you to link with other portions of this entire web site. Why? Well, since this game is a simulation, you may want to read up from time to time on how the island of Kauai is really run. To return to the game you can do several things. If you have frames, you would have already opened up another window to display chats, and other resources. Just close the new window. With other browsers, you can either click back until you get to the game, or just re-login. Either way, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

Section C displays your status bars. To make things short, it will tell you how your different industries are doing as you try to balance your island resources. Your financial information, population, your score and other info can appear here. This information is updated every turn.

Section D is where you will enter data. Using forms and cgi scripts, you will be able to buy hotels, create subdivisions, rezone land, and set aside land for agricultural development. You will define areas of land you wish to work with using a coordinate system. Just enter your coordinates like battleship (A, 10) and boom, a new hotel! Cool huh?

So, we don't want to hold you much longer. If you have to use the bathroom, please do. Don't get your keyboard all wet. If you are really excited, go ahead and apply for an account or login. However for those of us that are more mature, go ahead and read the more detailed instructions.
