Island Prisons: Educational Tour

Islands of Infamy

Educational Tour

Welcome to the educational lesson. In this tour you will be taken on a journey of discovery to learn more about two of the most famous prisons in the world—Alcatraz, in the USA, and Robben Island, in South Africa.

Both of these prisons were home to some of the most notorious American and courageous South African prisoners, from Al Capone to, on the opposite end of the spectrum, Nelson Mandela.

Their similarity lies in the fact that they are both situated on islands, but they were entirely different types of prisons: Alcatraz was home to murderers, thieves and gangsters, while Robben Island mostly contained people who fought unflinchingly to end racial discrimination in South Africa.

As historians, you will be able to take the following links and draw your own conclusions from resources throughout the Internet, and when you've finished, you can take a short quiz to see how well you've done.
