Islands of Infamy

Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay , rises 40 m above the sea and is about 535 m long. Juan Manuel de Ayala, a Spanish explorer, named the island Isla de los Alcatraces (Isle of the Pelicans) after the large pelican population which lived there. It was used as a military prison for the United States Department of Justice from 1868 until 1933 until it became a federal prison for dangerous prisoners.
