Possibilities for the Future

The ocean holds much for the future; relatively little of it has been explored. Massive oil and gas deposits lie untapped, waiting to be tapped for man's increasing use. The vast array of life and the complex interactions in the many ecosystems of the ocean will keep scientists and undersea geologists busy for decades, trying to extract medicines, drugs and chemicals from organisms and learning their secrets, or investigating seabed formations and habitats. Aquacultural techniques and methods will be developed further to allow large-scale sea farming to provide for skyrocketing human populations. If we do not quickly harness the resources the sea holds, we will not be able to meet the demands of our ever-filling world.
In
our rapidly overpopulating world, a few organisations have been looking
into the possibilities of undersea housing, for varying reasons such as
overcrowding or demand for luxury, novelty housing. In land-scarce Singapore,
for example, the government is considering it to ease the housing problem.
Scientists have evaluated the idea of building underwater structures for
housing, industry and aquaculture, and it has been shown to be quite feasible
and possible with today's technology. Perhaps, one day, we will find ourselves
living in cubelike, modular, undersea houses arranged in huge blocks like
a hive, sharing the same supply of necessities and relying on submersibles
for transport.
