This images of stars in the 30 Doradus nebula and star cluster was taken with the new Wide Field and Planetary Camera, WPC2, after the first HST Servicing Mission. It is the same area of sky covered by the previous picture. Small extra mirrors correct for the spherical aberration in the main mirror of HST. Now the brightest star, Melnick 34, appears with its light accurately concentrated. The four spikes from the star image are a normal effect when a telescope like the HST images a bright star and are a sign of a well-adjusted optical system. Dozens of fainter stars are now revealed as well.
